On the 11th of Banemer, 1279 (Iranian solar calendar) — corresponding to the 1st of May, 1900 — a boy was born in the city of Mahabad and was named Mohammad. Mohammad's father was Qazi Ali, and his mother was Lady Gewhertaj, daughter of Sher Beg. Qazi Ali came from the old and well-known Qazi family of Mahabad, and was the son of Mirza Qasim. His mother, Lady Gewhertaj, was the daughter of Agha Sher Beg, chief of the Feyzollah-begi tribe — one of the ancient, powerful tribes of Kurdistan whose lineage traced back to the Ayyubid family.
Besides Mohammad, Qazi Ali and Lady Gewhertaj had another son, named Abulqasem and known as Sadr, and three daughters: Khajij Khanem, Amina Khanem, and Fatima Khanem. Mohammad was still a child when his mother passed away, and Qazi Ali's second wife, Ziba Khanem, became a loving mother figure to Mohammad and his brother and sisters.1 For centuries this family had been known throughout Kurdistan as a center of religious and social life, and had always stood as a support and refuge for the poor and the afflicted.
From early childhood Mohammad had a distinctive presence. Qazi Ali was a devoted follower of Sheikh Burhan; once, visiting the sheikh, he brought six-year-old Mohammad along. Sheikh Burhan, despite being a man of great standing who rose for no one, stood at once and welcomed them the moment he heard Qazi Ali's greeting and saw him. Qazi Ali said, "My lord, why rise for me — please, sit back down." The sheikh replied: "It is not for you that I rose — it is for this boy. This boy will become a truly great and eminent man, whose renown will spread across the whole world."2
From the age of seven Mohammad began his studies with his father, later continuing at the Red Mosque, which at the time served as a religious seminary. He went on to study at the city's other mosques — Rostam Beg Mosque, Habbas Agha Mosque, and Qazi Mosque — as a religious student (feqê), continuing his education.
Owing to a natural gift for leadership and administration, he became head of two hundred fellow students at those mosques, organizing a weekly schedule that filled their time with study, sport, excursions, political discussion, and conversation about community life. It was in these gatherings that he composed poetry with his fellow students, answering only in the Kurdish verse of masters such as Wefayi, Nali, and Haji Qadir Koyi.
Young Mohammad, passionate about learning, could never satisfy his inner thirst through religious study alone, and would go wherever he sensed a chance to learn something new, without wasting a moment. For this reason, besides the mosque teachers, he also studied under his uncle Seifolqozat and Mullah Hussein Majdi, both learned men of their time. Qazi took pride in having been a student of "Ahmad-i Fewzi" (Mullah Ahmad, son of Feqê Ali), who held a firm belief in Kurdish nationalism.3
Alongside his religious and contemporary studies, he had a great enthusiasm for foreign languages and strove to master them. In an era when tools for study and contact with the outside world were extremely limited — with newspapers and magazines themselves rare — he worked to obtain and use a variety of sources. He learned English from American missionaries such as Dr. Shalk, Mr. Miller, Miss Cutat, and Miss Dall. During the period of Russian presence in Iran (1915–1917) he learned Russian from a man named Mirza Ismail, a translator for the Russians. Asadov, the Russian official in Mahabad, said Qazi spoke Russian with remarkable fluency. He also studied French under Abdulrahman Giwi Mukriyani. Beyond these efforts, he had also gained command of Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Azeri, and the international language Esperanto.
Because of his talent and the knowledge he had gathered since early youth — having also reached a high level in religious learning — Mohammad was entrusted with several important responsibilities. In 1305 (Iranian solar calendar) he became head of the Mahabad Education Directorate and expanded the city's first boys' school, "Saadat School," originally founded in 1295 by Seifolqozat; he also established the first girls' school, "Pirmas." He was further chosen as honorary head of Mahabad's health center and opened the city's first state hospital, "the Red Lion and Sun." He personally and continually visited the schools and hospital, closely overseeing their work and addressing any shortcomings. He placed great importance on newspapers and magazines, regularly reading and financially supporting publications such as Ettela'at, Shafaq-e Sorkh, Peyman magazine, the Gelawêj newspaper, and Zari Kermanji.
Around this same period he began a life together with a lady from Mahabad named Mina Khanem Eskandari (Kakaghazadeh); their marriage produced one son and seven daughters: Ali (known as "Kurr-i Reş"), Ismet, Ifet, Zeineb (Munira), Fewzia, Ko (Suheil), Gelawêj (Perwîn), and Meryem. Qazi Mohammad was a faithful husband and a devoted father.
Besides study and his love of knowledge and language, he had a strong passion for sport and physical fitness, reflecting his progressive, forward-looking mindset. He excelled at marksmanship, horsemanship, and swimming — there was a deep, wide pool on the Mahabad river where Qazi Mohammad swam nearly every day, still known to this day as "Qazi's Pool." Before sunrise and after morning prayer, he would run from the Red Lion and Sun Hospital to Qazi's Pool, swim, and return in time for his daily work. Of his horsemanship and marksmanship it was said: although the saddle on his horse was somewhat worn, the horse would gallop swiftly beneath him, and he was an excellent shot with a Browning pistol, striking his target with precision even from a distance.4
He kept a warm relationship with Sir Abulhasan Seifi Qazi, known as Seifolqozat, his uncle. Peshawa's worldview and the ideas that carried his character to its height originated from his uncle's tutelage.5 After the passing of his father, Qazi Ali, the duty of adjudicating the region's disputes fell upon his shoulders — and it was from this time that he came to bear the title "Qazi Mohammad." In his judicial work, as in everything else, he was meticulous and successful.
Qazi Mohammad had a particular gift for public speaking. With only a few sentences he could draw the attention of an entire audience and leave a lasting impression on them.6
Yet the most significant dimension of Qazi Mohammad's character was his political outlook regarding his nation, and his effort to free them from subjugation — a dimension so dominant that it somewhat overshadowed the other sides of his life. From early youth, reading foreign newspapers, magazines, and books, he became thoroughly acquainted with world politics, modern ways of life, industrial progress, and modern ideas, gathering his energy toward bringing his nation into a free, modern life. He came to understand that passing through the stages of struggle required its own instrument — and that the best political instrument is a party. For this reason he founded a new party, the Democratic Party of Kurdistan, built on the foundation of the JK organization, in which he himself was already a senior member. After founding the party and revealing his vision for a free, dignified homeland for the Kurds, he began political activity between Mahabad — as the Kurds' political center — Tehran, and the Soviet Union (Baku), bringing together the tribes of Kurdistan large and small, along with ordinary people, merchants, farmers, and every layer of Kurdish society. He undertook this in an era when Kurdistan had one of the lowest literacy rates, and economically had no source of income beyond agriculture, animal husbandry, tobacco farming, and modest customs revenue.

After deliberating on the foundations necessary for establishing a government, and with the backing of the people of Kurdistan — particularly the Mukriyan region — on the 2nd of Rêbendan, 1324 (Iranian solar calendar), he declared the Independent Government of Kurdistan at Chwarchra Square in Mahabad. From that day forward he bore the title "Peshawa," and to this day that title remains a symbol of the liberation and freedom of the Kurdish nation.
To manage the affairs of governance and public service, His Excellency Peshawa formed a council of ministers, appointing ministers, overseers, and officials for government departments from among the people of the city and region, and made the teaching and writing of Kurdish the primary language in schools. This was not limited to schools alone — Kurdish became the official language of Kurdistan, and letters, documents, newspapers, and magazines were written, printed, and published in Kurdish. The founding of a printing house, the creation of a theater, the printing of Kurdish novels and poetry, cultural gatherings and conferences, and many other such activities were part of the cultural achievements of the Republic of Kurdistan under Peshawa's supervision. The coining of the name "Peshmerga," the adoption of the Kurdistan flag as a national symbol, the formation of the National Army of Kurdistan, the adoption of the anthem "Ey Reqîb" as the national anthem, the introduction of the map of Greater Kurdistan, and more, were part of the political achievements of that era — achievements on which the foundation of the Kurdish struggle still rests today.
Unfortunately, owing to flawed international politics, the absence of outside support, and the brutality and disregard of the central government toward the will of subjugated nations, the Republic of Kurdistan collapsed after 11 months and 20 days, and Peshawa Qazi Mohammad, Mohammad Hussein Khan Seif Qazi, Abulqasem Sadr Qazi, and dozens of other officials of the Republic were taken into custody. After three months of an unjust, one-sided trial, a death sentence was issued for the Qazis.
On the night of the 10th of Khakelêwe, 1326 (Iranian solar calendar), the sentence was carried out at Chwarchra Square in Mahabad on His Excellency Qazi Mohammad, Mohammad Hussein Khan Seif Qazi, and Abulqasem Sadr Qazi — and the grief of losing these three martyrs has never healed in the heart of the Kurdish nation to this day. On that same day the remains of the martyrs of the Kurdish path to freedom were laid to rest at the foot of Daşamajîd mountain, which at the time served as the city's cemetery.

In this last hour of my life, I leave a testament to my homeland — to the future generations of my land, to my simple, honest, guileless people, to my brothers and my sisters, to the people of the city and every village, to those who come after us and may fall into the trap of a bloodthirsty enemy, to the deeply-feeling youth, to the defenceless Kurdish nation: heed this counsel of mine — never let your homeland slip from memory. For God's sake, do not kill one another; do not spill the blood of your own kin. Unite, stand together, stand firm at one another's backs. If a brother stands behind his brother, only a calamity from God could break you. Do not sell yourselves cheaply; strive instead on the road to freedom. Your enemies, for their own gain, wish to deceive you with trickery and lies — and once their work with you is done, they will cast you aside, and your place will be diminished.
The enemies of the Kurds are many and tyrannical — many without conscience, many without shame. All of them thirst for blood; all are drunk on your blood. The secret of every nation's victory is standing side by side, becoming one. The mark of triumph is togetherness; your scattering has never served you. Every nation, when free, is joyful and content — this comes from acting together and struggling as one, demanding freedom for their land. Those nations that failed to unite have remained subjugated, their sovereignty lost. You too, people of Kurdistan, must lack for nothing that other free nations possess. Unlike other peoples, you hold much that is of great worth. You are brave, possessed of true manhood, of honour and of courage. Only through unity can you stand against this force, as other free nations have done. You too must break the chains of captivity and cast the bonds of servitude from your necks.
Do not envy one another's good fortune; do not turn to iron and fire against each other. Never betray your own soil, your own kin, your own people. Do not be deceived by the enemy's false promises, though they all tell you the very same thing. Our enemy is deeply tyrannical, a killer of the poor Kurdish nation. Look back through history, up to today: the enemy has murdered our leaders with a thousand tricks and deceptions — from Jewhar Agha to Ismail Simko, up to the great man of the Mangur revolt, that renowned hero Hamza Agha, and dozens of other leaders — so our history shows. All were martyred in ambush and in hiding, betrayed under oath. They hold no true faith in oaths or in God; manhood has no place among them. Never yield an inch of your land to the enemy, in God's name. Do not abandon your trenches — hold each other's backs; may you live well, and be ready to die for one another.
If enemies offer you honey, know that poison lies within it — do not touch it. If you do not swallow the occupier's deceit, you will pass easily toward freedom. In this last moment of my life, this is my testament to my homeland. My only witness is God, for my love for you truly lies in my heart. On the path to your freedom and your happiness, for your liberty and your deliverance, I spared neither my life nor my wealth; I never let my time for my people go to waste. In no endeavour did I fall short; I never brought disgrace by working against my people. I stood firm upon my oath and my covenant, to remain faithful to my homeland. My effort, my struggle, my striving became a duty upon my shoulders. I kept my covenant and did not abandon it — to live and to die for my people and my clan. With love for you deep in my heart, I walk with my head held high toward death. In our enemies' eyes, being Kurdish itself was our crime; being a pure-hearted Kurd was the thorn in their eye.
My honour, my wealth, my head and my life are given freely before my adversaries. When the occupier stood on the field of war, they could never truly defeat you, never claim real victory. They resort instead to trickery and deceit — a hundred kinds of cunning fill their minds. The government of Tehran swore a thousand oaths, sent countless false promises — but I knew it was all a lie; a tree does not split on its own, the hollowness is within it. Those tribes who were deceived became bound to Hamza Reza. They extinguished the lamp of their own Republic; they rekindled the fire of their own enemy. I make this testament — let everyone read it: raise your children in knowledge and in school; let daughters and sons alike learn science, lest in days to come they become slaves and subjugated. The one thing we lack among us is people of knowledge and learning. In the caravan of humanity, do not let your caravan fall behind — go forth with courage. Let your education, your knowledge, your learning become a weapon in your hands.
Make unity and knowledge your foundation — the enemy will be broken forever. At my death, and the death of my kinsmen, never be afraid, my dear ones. For after us, many more will surely give their lives on the path to freedom. The tree of liberty is not watered without blood; without it, its branches and leaves wither and die. After us, I am certain, many heroes will follow this same path. But because they are pure of heart, they will be deceived — their names smeared with lies. So let me tell those who come after: let the death of the martyred Qazis be a lesson — for those who struggle, for revolutionaries, for the old and for all the young. I make this testament for all of you, for the loyal ones of this homeland: ask of God that you be free and joyful, a nation glad and liberated. Never ask why I did not succeed, even though I now lie asleep in a cold grave. My victory lies in this very moment — that my head was given for my people, at the foot of the gallows.
To sacrifice one's life for one's homeland — what a great blessing such a death is. I built Kurdistan with blood; I triumphed, and I subdued my enemy. I asked of God only the hour of my death — that at my funeral, carried to my grave, I be one devoted to God and to His people, given by such a death for my people. Even now, with my wealth, my life, and my very head, I wear the proud crown of a martyr upon me. Such a death is itself a victory; a useless life is, in itself, a kind of death. My dear ones, my beloved ones — do not let my testament fade from your memory: Kurdistan is the possession of all Kurds; it is the home of the Kurds in all this world. Every human being, in their own home, is free and must live there. Do not give up on Kurdish liberation; safeguard every trace and legacy of the Kurds. Let those who come after be accountable for your cause; be mindful and responsible toward it. Do not stand idle in the way of their path; do not conspire against their outlook.
Carry out your own duties well — if you are loyal, then all of you are leaders. A Kurdish brother is far better for you; his heart is truer, for you and for your homeland. May the burden of responsibility not have weighed on me — even now, may the rope not weigh upon my neck. I did not delay in standing at the foot of the gallows; I did not rise late from the sleep of negligence. But my duty was itself my purpose, and so my death became a gain for my people. As long as my soul remained faithful, I never once stood still where your freedom was concerned. So I am certain a day will come when they see joy, in the city and in the village. Freedom will come to you from the occupier's grip; a day of awakening and awareness will come to you. Hold faith in God and in the Prophet — religion is a trench; let there be a trench. Be loyal to one another, become companions; share each other's sorrow and each other's joy alike. Cast envy out from your hearts; let the learned and the capable lead the way. Carry out the orders of those responsible; compete with one another in service to your people.
Let knowledge lead you forward, but do not be deceived — never wash your hands of learning and study. Do not consider the enemy your friend, for your enemies are full of cunning. Our enemy is twice an enemy — an enemy of faith, and an enemy of my nation. For the smallest excuse they will kill; mercilessly they will spill your blood. For a few worthless days of this world, do not sell yourselves; do not lose your resolve. Never betray one another; live together pure of heart and clean. Do not betray one another in wealth or in life, neither in politics nor in honour. For the traitor is forever disgraced; betrayal itself is a threat that returns upon the traitor. Cooperate with those who are pure of heart — the toiling people of this nation and this land. Help one another; put their work first; become kin and family to one another. This is what I have pointed to in this testament — this troubled house that I have built for you. Make use of those mosques and those schools; they are all yours. Do not abandon the revolution — let there be struggle; strive hard, so that there may be a homeland. If the land comes into your own hands, be independent, and have a republic of your own. Then you will be masters of wealth and property, sovereign over your own honour and dignity. Now, for the last time, this is my testament to you: unite around your own symbol. Your freedom, your life, and your very being cannot be secured without your unity. I have counselled you, O my people — and now I have gone; may God be with you. In service to my nation, to my homeland — long live Kurdistan, with my pure blood.
